Victoria and Decoy were a great combination in creating exceptional pups.  As you view the photos below, you will see two of their pups are a part of Paws For Freedom, “S.T.A.R.T.” Club, a Student Trainer and Retriever partnership program. Paws For Freedom offers animal-assited therapy to youth with learning disabilities. “The goal of this after-school therapeutic/academic program is to allow student trainers to develop self-esteem, focus, acquire patience, learn responsibility, obtain peer recognition and acquire employment skills.”  You may visit their web site and learn more of how the handicapped are training dogs to assist wheelchair handicapped. Paws For Freedom   We kept the yellow male, “Bert”, to add to our field and water retrieving hunters and stud dogs.  These two adults have produced some very fine pups.

It is with great sadness I report Gibson passed away on 9-23-2021, just about 3 months from his 12th birthday.  Gibson is pictured above with his owner in her wheelchair.  Diana received Gibson, her handicap assistance dog, after he completed specific training for her needs from Paws for Freedom (which retired a few years ago).  Diana contacted me often to share her zeal and renewed thrill for life because she was so thankful for how much her life improved when Gibson entered he life.  She rarely left her home until Gibson opened doors for her, turned lights on and off and picked things up for her.  Most important was Gibsons ability to recognize Diana was not breathing and go get help from her family members.  Diana was never alone and had Gibson’s love and care at all times.

Gibson is one of more than a dozen of my dogs that have been able to provide assistance to those with varying handicaps.  I am so thankful for the trainers who procure each dog’s talents to match the needs of the owner and I hope to continue to provide pups for these special people in the future.
