Blue was so easily trained and an incredible dog to hunt with! In 1996, just before Blue was 2 years old, he starred in the Cabela’s Signature Series video: “Training Pointers with Harold Adams”.  Although it is no longer available, the video gave instruction on what a hunter should expect out of a German Shorthair Pointer as their hunting companion.  It instructed  you the right way to help a dog to behave when it is in training, as well as handling them as adults in the field. Blue was an excellent star in the video!

We had many hunts and Blue was one of the best German Shorthairs we had ever seen.  We completed only one  field trial with Blue before he competed and won 4th place in the National Pheasant Hunting Championship, Pointing Single, 1998. Even though it was only his 2nd field trial experience, Blue’s hunting skills combined with his owner’s accurate shooting made them such a great team. 

Blue sure was named correctly.  He would have won many blue ribbons if we had had more free time to travel and compete in Field Trials!  Although we did enjoy field trials, we decided to dedicate our time to our family, kennel and real upland hunting.

Admittedly, we wanted to continue Blues pedigree lines.  We  bred Blue with Holly  a Junior Hunter, and they had a litter of pups in December of 1997. We kept Leonard from that litter and he was just as great of a hunter and retriever for us as his dad.  So many of Blue’s strengths and hunting skills were continued in Leonard.

Hunting through the last season of his 9th year, Acme Acres Blue was quite the stud and hunting companion.  A nose like no other, roaming with storybook pointer perfection, pointing like a statue, retrieving with zeal, and no end to his determination to search and find dead birds, brought great food and joy to our family table.  Stories of his field trial award and hunts are still being told today. We miss him greatly!
